What is a Renewal of Vows Ceremony? What is a Renewal of Vows Ceremony?

A Renewal of Vows ceremony (or reaffirmation ceremony) is similar in format to a traditional marriage ceremony, and offers couples who have been married for some period of time, to reaffirm their love, commitment and unity all over again. The ceremony is often less formal than a traditional marriage ceremony, and generally more of a casual celebration.

Renewal of vows ceremonies are common for couples celebrating 10 years through to their 50 years, or for couples enduring difficult times, such as the onset of Illness in one partner, or following some kind of personal loss or distress.

Whilst there is no strict traditional format that must be adhered to, many couples tend to write their own vows, emphasising the reasons that they have chosen to renew their vows

Are there any Legal Requirements? What Differentiates Renewal of Vows Ceremonies?

Renewal of Vows ceremonies are distinctly different from standard marriage ceremonies because they provide an opportunity for couples to reflect their journey thus far. They also provide a chance for couples to pause and reflect on where they have been, and what they will do in the future.

To give the ceremony greater meaning, couples can decide to exchange new rings, incorporate their original wedding music, or even display their original wedding photos. Couples may also choose to reaffirm their original vows or write updated versions.

Are there any Legal Requirements? Are there any Legal Requirements?

There are no legal requirements or legally binding declarations that are required. As a result there is no legal paperwork required, however the Celebrant may decide to issue commemorative certificate, which can be signed by two witnesses at the ceremony, which (unlike legal marriages), can be signed by people of any age, including children.

Renewal of Vows Rituals & Traditions

As with traditional marriages, there is a range of possible rituals and traditions that can be performed. Rituals are a fantastic way to symbolise emotions and ceremonial commitments. Many of the rituals that are performed at reaffirmation ceremonies symbolise love, unity, commitment and a new beginning.
